DJs Now Included in UK’s Skilled Worker Visa List

DJs are now officially recognized as “skilled workers” under the UK’s post-Brexit visa rules. This change is part of the updated skilled worker visa scheme, introduced after the UK’s exit from the EU in 2021.

DJs Among “Middle-Skilled” Professions

A report by The Guardian reveals that Home Office data from 2021 to 2024 includes DJs among “middle-skilled” professions eligible for skilled worker visas. Other professions in this category are cabin crew, fitness instructors, and veterinary nurses.

University of Oxford researcher Robert McNeil, who discovered this data, explained that these roles require specialized skills and training. He said, “Most people associate middle-skilled jobs with roles like plumbers or bricklayers, but the government’s classification system includes surprising options.”

Why “Middle-Skilled” Jobs Are Included

The inclusion of DJs and similar roles is due to the UK Home Office’s decision to lower the criteria for skilled worker visas after Brexit. By applying an official qualifications framework, the government expanded the list of eligible professions.

Applicants must have sponsorship from a UK employer and meet a minimum salary of £38,700 per year. For those under 26 or pursuing higher education, the threshold is reduced to £31,000 annually.

Other Visa Options for DJs and Musicians

DJs and musicians have additional visa options for working in the UK:

  • Creative Worker Visa: Requires a sponsorship certificate and allows artists to stay for up to 12 months, with work limited to 20 hours per week.
  • Creative Worker Visa Concession: Enables DJs and musicians to work in the UK for three months without a full skilled worker visa.
  • Permit Free Festivals: Major UK festivals like The Warehouse Project, Creamfields, and Wireless can sponsor international artists to perform for up to six months.

Recognizing DJs as skilled workers reflects the evolving immigration rules in the UK post-Brexit. This change values creative professions and provides international DJs and musicians with opportunities to enrich the UK’s cultural scene.
