Google has introduced MusicFX DJ, an advanced AI music tool that lets users create full DJ sets in real-time using a variety of unique prompts. Developed by Google Labs in collaboration with DeepMind Technologies, MusicFX DJ is an extension of Google’s original MusicFX tool, adding the ability to generate complete, dynamic music sets.
UK artist Jacob Collier, who serves as a project advisor, shared insights on Instagram, explaining that MusicFX DJ goes beyond traditional music generation. Users can prompt the AI not only with genres or instruments but with emotions, abstract imagery, and even invented words, allowing for a more personalized and expressive music-making experience.
While the previous MusicFX version could create 30-second tracks from written prompts, MusicFX DJ elevates this by enabling full-set creation. This update means users can type in prompts like “vibrato theremin jam” or “hip-house,” and watch the AI bring it to life in a cohesive DJ set.
MusicFX DJ opens new doors for both professional musicians and beginners, offering a creative playground for sound exploration. Meanwhile, DeepMind has announced updates to their Music AI Sandbox toolkit, which promises further advances in generative music AI.
This launch comes amid ongoing discussions about the role of AI in music. In recent months, major record labels like Universal, Sony, and Warner have voiced concerns about AI’s use of copyrighted materials in training models, and lawmakers in the UK are exploring potential regulations for AI in the music industry.
