Libero Reina
Libero Reina’s Musical Odyssey
Hailing from the small Sicilian mountain town of Santo Stefano Quisquina, Libero Reina’s journey into music began at the age of eight. Starting with the Flicorno Soprano in a local brass band, he later transitioned to electric, classical, and acoustic guitars. Over time, his curiosity drove him to explore traditional Sicilian instruments like the mandolin and mandola, as well as cultural treasures like the Greek bouzouki, Persian santoor and setar, Turkish zurna, Ney Anban, and the Hang drum.
Libero’s deep connection with his Sicilian roots and the Arab influences embedded in his culture shaped his musical identity. “Discovering Sicily’s historical connection with the Arab world was like uncovering roots I didn’t even know were mine,” he says. This revelation inspired him to blend Mediterranean heritage with modern electronic sounds, creating a signature style he calls electro_mediterranean.
Breaking Boundaries Through Creativity
Libero’s music is driven by relentless curiosity and experimentation. “Music is a bridge between cultures—a way to bring people together while celebrating their differences,” he explains. His compositions feature a harmonious fusion of rhythmic beats, the distinct tones of traditional instruments, and deep sub-bass frequencies that resonate with the soul.
Singing in Sicilian—a language both personal and expressive—Libero tells stories that are uniquely his, yet universally resonant. “My goal is to create something fresh and unexpected,” he shares, recalling a compliment that encapsulates his artistic spirit: “You’re strange! I’ve never heard anything like this before.”
Despite challenges in gaining mainstream attention for this genre in Italy, Libero remains optimistic. “Platforms like Cafe De Anatolia and artists like Acid Arab are proving there’s a global audience for this sound,” he notes, expressing gratitude for opportunities to connect with listeners worldwide.
Milestones and Memorable Moments
The summers of 2023 and 2024 were defining periods in Libero’s career, with over 30 concerts each year featuring exclusively his original music. He fondly recalls the positive reactions from audiences, which reinforced his commitment to staying true to his artistic vision.
Another turning point came through his collaboration with Persian actress and singer Negar Madjaddad. “That experience opened new artistic perspectives for me, allowing me to blend sounds and cultures in ways I had never explored before,” Libero says.
His achievements include receiving the Sicilia Eccellente Award, a recognition that affirmed his decision to pursue a less conventional path. For Libero, this milestone validated his dedication to creating music that reflects his roots while pushing creative boundaries.
Navigating Challenges with Resilience
Libero’s journey has not been without obstacles. He emphasizes the importance of self-sufficiency, a lesson learned from moments when relying on others hindered his progress. “I taught myself to sing, mix, and produce so I could create independently,” he shares.
Through consistent effort, preparation, and a focus on growth, Libero has weathered challenges while maintaining his passion for music. “I’ve learned to never stop working,” he says. “Opportunities may not come when you expect, but they always return. The key is to stay ready.”
A Vision Rooted in Passion
Libero’s creative process is a blend of discipline and inspiration. His studio, affectionately called “la casetta,” is where melodies come to life. Whether walking in the mountains or experimenting with instruments, Libero draws inspiration from his heritage and surroundings.
For him, music is not just a career—it’s a mission. “Music constantly fuels my drive to create. Even when inspiration feels elusive, I reconnect with what matters most: my heritage, my surroundings, and my curiosity,” he explains.
Looking Ahead
Libero Reina’s journey continues as he blends the past with the future, crafting a sound that celebrates cultural identity while breaking boundaries. With an unwavering commitment to authenticity and innovation, he remains a beacon of creativity in the music industry.
His advice to aspiring musicians? “Stay true to your vision, and don’t chase trends. Your uniqueness is your greatest asset. Music is deeply personal, and your story is something only you can tell.”
