Electronic Music Surpasses Indie on TikTok and Festival Stages in 2025

Electronic music is taking over more than just the dance floor—it’s now dominating the algorithm. In a major shift, EDM (Electronic Dance Music) has officially surpassed indie music on TikTok, marking a new era in digital music trends and festival culture.

EDM Surges Ahead on TikTok

In 2024, TikTok users tagged their videos with #ElectronicMusic over 13 billion times globally—a jaw-dropping 45% increase from the previous year. For the first time, these numbers eclipsed those for content tagged with indie and alternative music, according to The Guardian.

The trend isn’t just about numbers. It reflects a broader cultural movement. EDM is no longer confined to nightclubs—it’s deeply embedded in the DNA of social media, lifestyle content, and global pop culture.

EDM Fuels Content Creation Across Niches

From fitness routines to fashion transitions and scenic travel montages, TikTok creators are embracing electronic beats at an unprecedented rate. Year-on-year, video creation using electronic music sounds grew by more than 100%, outpacing even hip-hop and indie—two genres that traditionally dominated the platform.

Toyin Mustapha, TikTok’s Head of Music Partnerships for the UK and Ireland, notes:

“Dance music has become more accessible and big in the commercial sphere. We are seeing the breaking down of boundaries for artists, and TikTok is part of that.”

Music Festivals Mirror the Trend

This shift isn’t limited to online platforms. Major music festivals are now reflecting TikTok-driven music tastes in their programming. In 2025, electronic music artists make up 39% of the Coachella lineup, according to data from ROSTR. That’s a staggering increase for a festival historically rooted in indie and rock sounds.

With more listeners turning to EDM for both energy and emotion, the genre’s commercial momentum continues to climb.

What This Means for the Industry

This evolution signals a turning point in how music is consumed, shared, and celebrated. As electronic music continues to dominate digital spaces, artists and festivals are rethinking how to stay culturally relevant—and it’s clear that EDM is leading the charge.
